William Gilpin (4 June 1724 – 5 April 1804) was an English artist, Anglican cleric, schoolmaster and author, best known as one of the originators of the idea of the picturesque.
Malcolm Andrews. Malcom Andrews is an Emeritus Professor of Victorian and Visual Studies at the University of Kent. He is the editor of the journal The Dickensian and author of a number of books on Dickens, including Dickens and the Grown-Up Child and Charles Dickens and his Performing Selves.
The word picturesque, meaning literally “in the manner of a picture; fit to be made into a picture”, was a word used as early as 1703 (Oxford English Dictionary), and derived from an Italian term pittoresco, “in the manner of a painter”.
